Lungs are awesome creations by god, the organ through which we breathe. All say they keep their loved ones in heart but I keep them in my lungs, that is the level of unconditional love I have towards pulmonary medicine. Pulmonologist means lungs specialist who treat lung diseases as their sole interest. There may be many hundreds of lungs specialist in Chennai by name but there will be very few who are passionate for the field, I can proudly say I am one of them.

Where exactly your lungs are located and what they do?

The lungs, which is the organ for respiration is a paired cone shaped organs lying in the thoracic cavity separated from each other by the heart and other structures in the mediastinum. Each lung has a base resting on the diaphragm and an apex extending superiorly to a point approximately 2.5 cm superior to the clavicle. It also has a medial surface and with three borders- anterior, posterior and inferior. The broad coastal surface of the lungs is pressed against the rib cage, while the smaller mediastinal surface faces medially. The lungs receive the bronchus, blood vessels, lymphatic vessels and nerves through a slit in the mediastinal surface called the hilum, and the structures entering the hilum constitutes the lungs root.

The right lung is larger and weighs more than the left lung. Since the heart tilts to the left, the left lung is smaller than the right and has an indentation called the cardiac impression to accommodate the heart. This indentation shapes the inferior and anterior parts of the superior lobe into a thin tongue-like process called the lingula.

Normal Lung Functions:

Breathing is taken for granted by most people. It is one part of the process of respiration which provides our bodies with a continuous supply of oxygen. Oxygen is the fuel of life. It keeps us all alive. Oxygen enters our lungs as part of the air that we breathe. It goes to the blood vessels deep in our lungs and then on to all parts of our body. As our body uses oxygen, it makes a waste product called carbon dioxide. We get rid of carbon dioxide when we breathe out.

When we breathe in, air flows through the nose or mouth, down the throat, through the voice box, and down the windpipe (trachea). The air then comes to two main large airways (the right and left bronchial tubes). These large airways branch into smaller and smaller airways (bronchioles). Wrapped around the airways are muscles which crisscross each other. We have no control over these muscles, and their exact purpose is not known. Air continues through these small airways until it finally reaches the tiny balloon-like air sacs (alveoli). It is at these air sacs that the oxygen is taken into the blood.
